Biotechnology offers the opportunity to produce energy with zero or negative net greenhouse gas emissions from bio-derived fuels or bio-electron transfer. Battelle Science & Technology Malaysia's network of specialists have been involved in bio-energy research since the mid-1970s, developing and applying novel thermal, chemical, and biological processes to convert biomass to industrial and consumer products, fuels, and energy. The hallmark of our research has been novel catalytic processes that convert sugars and organic acids to commodity and specialty chemicals with a higher market value than biomass-derived fuel or energy. With expertise in biofuel technology and microbial transfer mechanisms and applications, Battelle Science & Technology Malaysia offers partners and customers:
A biorefinery produces not only biofuels, but also bio-based products and chemicals that are conventionally produced using petroleum, such as plastic bottles, synthetic materials, or specialty chemicals. Typically consisting of high-pressure catalytic reactor rooms, bioprocessing labs, wet chemical labs, supporting analytical chemistry equipment, and process engineering research and development, biorefineries are used for integration and scale-up of the various processing steps in manufacturing bioproducts. The revenues from selling products help make biofuels economical and more competitive with petroleum. Battelle Science & Technology Malaysia's resources include expertise in designing and building biorefineries.
