Beginning with a few machine shops and foundries that were critical to materials research for the U.S. iron and steel industries in the 1930s, Battelle now owns more than two million square feet of laboratories in multiple locations that perform cutting edge research in areas such as biotechnology, advanced materials, energy, and security.

We serve more than 800 federal, state, and local government agencies through offices in more than 100 locations around the world. With the national labs we manage or co-manage for the U.S. Department of Energy, Battelle oversees 20,000 staff members and conducts $2.9 billion in annual research and development.
